Renovated Barbuda Community Centre Stands as Symbol of Resilience

The newly renovated Barbuda Community Centre opened earlier this year, marking a significant milestone in the island’s ongoing recovery from the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma in 2017.

The upgraded facility, which doubles as a hurricane shelter, has been extensively repaired and modernized to better serve residents during emergencies. Beyond its role as a refuge, the centre will now host community meetings, celebrations, and cultural events — fostering stronger social connections among Barbudans.

Officials say the renovation reflects Barbuda’s continued progress in rebuilding critical infrastructure destroyed when Irma damaged 95 percent of the island eight years ago.

The project was funded through a USD $31 million loan from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), supported by the government and implemented by the Project Implementation Management Unit (PIMU) within the Ministry of Works.

“We are grateful for the ongoing support from organizations such as the UNDP, CDB, and the European Union,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that the upgrades demonstrate “resilience in the face of adversity.”

The refurbished Community Centre is among several major civil works completed on the sister isle. These include the renovated Barbuda Council Administrative Building and the construction of the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) Operations Centre. Work also continues on a Community Multipurpose Centre and miles of resilient concrete roads aimed at improving transportation and supporting Barbuda’s economic growth.
