High Surf Warning Issued for Barbuda as Dangerous Sea Conditions Develop

October 19, 2025
in Insights

A High Surf Warning has been issued for Barbuda, with forecasters warning of life-threatening surf and rip currents expected from Sunday evening through early Monday.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services said that rising long-period swells are producing very hazardous surf along the island’s northern and north-facing coastlines, particularly near reefs and exposed coastal areas with gently to moderately sloping shores.

Seas are forecast to reach between 2.1 and 3.4 metres (7 to 11 feet), and could peak at 4 metres (13 feet) in some locations. Breaking waves may exceed 2.7 metres (9 feet), with a swell period of 10 to 13 seconds.

Officials warn the conditions could lead to beach erosion, coastal flooding, and damage to reefs and coastal infrastructure. Marine businesses and recreational activities are also likely to be disrupted.

Residents and visitors are being advised to avoid swimming or entering the water along affected coastlines and to stay off rocks, jetties and sea walls. Swimmers should use only sheltered beaches where lifeguards are present.

The warning for Barbuda remains in effect from Sunday evening to dawn on Monday, and authorities urge the public to monitor official updates as sea conditions may worsen.
