Cabinet Monitors APUA’s Efforts to Curb Electricity Meter Bypass

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda is closely monitoring the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) as it intensifies efforts to curb electricity theft following reports of some businesses allegedly bypassing electricity meters to avoid paying for usage.

According to Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant, the Cabinet was briefed on APUA’s findings and the measures being implemented to strengthen monitoring and enforcement.

Merchant said APUA has begun introducing new technology capable of detecting tampering and unauthorized connections, allowing the utility to identify irregular consumption patterns in real time.

He noted that Cabinet fully supports APUA’s initiative to safeguard government revenue and ensure fairness among consumers. “The Cabinet was advised that APUA has been taking steps to improve its system to prevent businesses from bypassing their electricity meters,” Merchant said.

The latest measures include enhanced inspection routines, digital tracking of meter data, and the installation of upgraded smart meters across several commercial areas.

Electricity theft has long posed a challenge for the utility company, leading to financial losses and placing additional strain on legitimate consumers.

Officials say the new detection systems and monitoring tools form part of a broader push to modernize APUA’s operations and maintain the financial sustainability of its electricity division.

The Cabinet emphasized that penalties for illegal connections will be enforced under the existing laws governing public utilities, and urged full compliance to ensure equitable service across the country.
