PM Browne Announces ‘People’s Restitution Fund’ for Customs Violations
Prime Minister Gaston Browne says his government will establish a new “People’s Restitution Fund” to collect penalties, interest, and other charges from importers found guilty of customs violations.
In a social media post, Browne stated that proceeds from the fund “will be used to fund social programs,” framing the initiative as a way to ensure accountability while benefiting the public.
The announcement follows Browne’s recent comments about restitution efforts in the ongoing government vehicle probe, where one dealer agreed to repay $10 million. He has also indicated that excess or improperly assigned government vehicles will be sold at public auction after a fleet audit is completed.
The People’s Restitution Fund is expected to formalize how recovered monies and fines are managed, channeling them toward public welfare
