Excessive Heat Warning Issued for Antigua and Barbuda
Residents of Antigua and Barbuda have been warned to take precautions as extreme heat is set to persist through Sunday, with temperatures feeling as high as 43°C (109°F).
The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service issued an excessive heat warning on Wednesday, in effect daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Sunday. Light winds combined with high humidity will create dangerously hot conditions, particularly in the early afternoons.
The heat index, which reflects the perceived temperature based on humidity and air temperature, is expected to peak at 43°C. Warnings are issued when the index reaches 41°C (106°F) or higher for two or more consecutive days with winds below 18 km/h (11 mph).
Health risks are greatest for the elderly, young children, people with chronic illnesses, and those working or exercising outdoors. Extreme heat can cause heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and potentially fatal heat stroke. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, extreme thirst, or confusion. Anyone experiencing these signs should move to a cool place, hydrate, and seek medical help if symptoms are severe.
Authorities urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun during peak hours, and check on vulnerable family members, friends, and neighbours. Those on medication should consult their doctors about heat-related risks.
