Mourners have gathered today to pay their final respects to slain businessman George “Charlie” Barnes, whose death last month shocked the nation and left the community in mourning.
Barnes, a 74-year-old gas station owner, was fatally shot outside his home on Nugent Street, Ottos Newtown, on September 12.
He was remembered during the funeral service as a hardworking, generous, and humble man who dedicated his life to his family, business, and community.
Family, friends, and members of the business community filled the church to celebrate his life and legacy. Tributes highlighted his decades of service and the kindness he extended to all who knew him.

Police say investigations into his killing are ongoing.
A post-mortem examination was conducted by Government Pathologist Dr. Petra Miller-Nanton on September 29, but authorities have not released the official findings.
As the community lays Barnes to rest, many continue to call for justice and an end to the violence that claimed the life of a man described as a pillar of integrity and goodwill.
