Residents of Antigua and Barbuda are being advised to take precautions as air quality levels reach moderate levels due to a surge in Saharan dust.
The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services issued an Air Quality Bulletin on Saturday morning, reporting that particulate matter concentrations, specifically PM2.5 and PM10, have caused the air quality index to range between 60 and 100, classifying it as moderate.
This marks the twenty-third notable Saharan dust event for the country this year.
According to the bulletin, the overall health risk remains low for most people. However, sensitive groups—including those with respiratory or heart conditions, the elderly, and children—are urged to monitor their exposure and limit prolonged outdoor activity.
Active children, adults, and individuals with asthma should exercise particular caution.
The Meteorological Services advise residents to stay informed through official channels, including the service’s website (antiguamet.com), social media platforms, and local media outlets such as ABS Radio and TV.
“While air quality is acceptable for the general population, those who are unusually sensitive to air pollutants may experience moderate health concerns,” the bulletin said.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates on air quality levels through tomorrow.
