ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — Prime Minister Gaston Browne says the government will invest more than $4 million next year to train new police recruits and provide officers with upgraded equipment, marking one of the most significant crime-fighting allocations in the 2026 national budget.
Browne made the announcement during Thursday’s budget presentation, describing the security investment as essential to keeping the country safe amid concerns about violent incidents and border vulnerabilities.
“In 2026, we will intensify crime prevention and strengthen our borders. We are investing over $4 million to train additional police recruits and equip our officers,” Browne told Parliament.
He said the funding will support expanded training programmes, improved operational readiness and new tools needed to “stay ahead of criminal networks.” The allocation includes specialised crime-fighting technologies and targeted surveillance capabilities scheduled for delivery next year.
Browne stressed that prosperity “means little if our people do not feel safe,” adding that despite Antigua and Barbuda remaining one of the safest countries in the region, the government intends to push crime rates even lower.
“One homicide is one too many,” he said, pledging tougher policing and stronger border protections.
The security package forms part of a broader enforcement strategy that includes upgraded maritime assets. Earlier this year, the Defence Force received a 30-foot interceptor vessel capable of speeds up to 75 miles per hour. The Cabinet has also approved US$1 million to upgrade communications and radar systems, along with plans to acquire a larger patrol vessel to monitor the country’s economic zone.
Browne issued a blunt warning to offenders as he outlined the 2026 security agenda: “We’re coming for you. We’ll find you. We’ll prosecute you… Go for them!”
