moves towards developing state - A&B moves towards developing State Actio

Representatives of aviation and environmental companies and agencies in Antigua and Barbuda began discussions on the development of an aviation environmental Action Plan for Antigua and Barbuda last week.

Moves Towards Developing State

The meeting is a response to the mandates from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for controlling emissions from the aviation industry as the international community moves towards the goal of net zero carbon emissions from aviation by 2050, a press release noted.

The meeting was held at the Training Room of the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board and included presentations from aviation and environmental experts in Antigua and Barbuda as well as from the ICAO regional office in Mexico City.

Speaking at the opening of the consultation, Ambassador Brian Challenger who chaired the event, noted that the participation of environmental and climate change experts was particularly important as it aimed at ensuring that any actions undertaken within aviation are consistent with Antigua and Barbuda’s wider international efforts to address the climate change crisis.

Participants at the Consultation held discussions on the development of a State Action Plan (SAP) for Antigua and Barbuda. The document is expected to outline the country’s long term strategy for reducing CO2 emissions from international aviation while recognizing the particular circumstances of Antigua and Barbuda as a small island developing state.

Once completed, the SAP will provide a platform for setting voluntary emissions reduction targets and selecting any mitigation measures through engagement of relevant national stakeholders.

Working with the ICAO and national experts, it is hoped that Antigua and Barbuda will be able to submit its State Action Plan to ICAO during 2026.
