Jamaican Man Charged Possession
A drug interdiction at the VC Bird International Airport on Sunday has led to the arrest and remand of a 38-year-old Jamaican national after officers discovered nearly 60 pounds of cannabis that was concealed in two suitcases.
The drugs carry an estimated street value of EC $360,000.
The March 1st operation, which was carried out by officers from the Narcotics Department, the K-9 Unit and the Customs Enforcement Unit, resulted in the seizure of 19 sealed packages of cannabis discovered inside the two pieces of luggage.
Benjamin Isaiah Carrington was arrested in connection with the seizure and was subsequently brought before Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel, where he appeared without legal representation.
He was charged with possession of cannabis with intent to transfer, drug trafficking, being concerned with the supply of cannabis, importation of cannabis, and simple possession.
In determining bail, the court weighed the severity of the charges against Carrington, alongside the fact that he has no known ties to Antigua and Barbuda. Satisfied that he posed a flight risk, Chief Magistrate Emanuel remanded Carrington to His Majesty’s Prison. He was, however, informed of his right to apply for bail at the High Court.
He is scheduled to return to court on May 6, 2026.
