Equipment for the government’s long anticipated island-wide CCTV surveillance system is on its way to Antigua, with installation expected to begin within weeks.
Director General of Communications in the Prime Minister’s Office Maurice Merchant noted that Cabinet was advised at its most recent meeting that the necessary equipment has already been shipped and is due to arrive within the next 30 days.
Forty-three strategic locations across Antigua and Barbuda have been identified for the placement of high-definition cameras, covering major public spaces, commercial areas, and critical tourist corridors, he said, adding that the system is designed to serve multiple law enforcement objectives, with targeted sites including high-traffic areas such as Fort James and Bay Street, in the Villa area.
“The targeted placement of cameras is intended to enhance crime detection and deterrence, also improve public order management and support law enforcement initiatives. This CCTV network will significantly strengthen the capacity of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda, enabling real-time monitoring and, most particularly, rapid response to incidents,” Merchant said.
Beyond supporting the police, he said, the system is also expected to address quality-of-life concerns for both residents and visitors in frequently used public spaces.
“The system will also serve as an important tool in combating muggings, theft, and a number of other petty crimes, particularly in areas frequented by residents and visitors,” Merchant noted.
Installation is scheduled to commence immediately upon the equipment’s arrival, with full deployment anticipated within two months thereafter.
The announcement builds on a commitment made by Prime Minister Gaston Browne in September 2025, following the shooting of businessman George “Charlie” Barnes. At the time, the Prime Minister disclosed that the government had acquired approximately 200 surveillance cameras and was finalising the installation package.
“We’re just about to conclude a deal in which we have this camera system with 200 cameras that we will be deploying islandwide to provide greater surveillance,” PM Browne said then on his radio station.
