Gov Signs Contract Relocate
The government has officially signed a contract to relocate state-owned ABS Television/Radio entity to the Caribbean Cinemas building on Friars Hill Road.
The decision was made after the workers took industrial action on March 2, due to mold infestation, flooding, and deteriorating conditions at the Cross Street location.
Subsequently, their bargaining agent — the Antigua Trades & Labour Union – instructed the workers to clock in and immediately leave the premises
However, during Thursday’s post-Cabinet press briefing, Director of Communications Maurice Merchant stated the administration is moving at a “fast pace” to address the issues, which have caused significant interruptions to regular programming.
The Department of Works will begin an immediate assessment of the new site over the coming weekend, he added.
“The Department of Works will move immediately later this week … to start its overview and review of the facilities,” Merchant said. “In the interim, Public Works will be making some adjustments at the current facilities.”
The government expects the full transition to be completed within two months.
In the meantime, maintenance teams will remain active at the current premises to ensure a safer environment for employees until the move is finalized.
