Global Citizen Organization Proposes
The upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is set to expand its reach through a proposed partnership with the international advocacy organization, Global Citizen.
Representatives from the group met with the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda on Wednesday to outline a vision that combines high-level diplomacy with youth engagement and cultural programming.
The proposal seeks to transform the November summit into a broader global leadership platform.
According to Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant, the delegation explained that their proposal “seeks to transform CHOGM moment into a broader global leadership platform by combining high-level policy dialogue, youth engagement, advocacy, and cultural programming.”
The collaboration would center on the “Global Citizen Now” forum, featuring panel discussions and policy dialogues involving heads of government, private sector leaders, and philanthropists. Merchant noted that these “discussions will focus on themes including climate action, youth opportunity, entrepreneurship, digital transformation, and private sector innovation.”
A cornerstone of the initiative is the “Digital Futures for Youth” program.
This project aims to expand access to artificial intelligence and digital tools for two million young people across the Commonwealth by the year 2030.
Merchant indicated that the initiative would “aim to mobilize some US $50 million in public, philanthropic, and private sector funding with commitments to be announced during CHOGM and other related activities.”
In addition to policy discussions, the proposal includes a massive cultural event titled “Global Citizen Nights: Antigua and Barbuda.”
Merchant described the concert directly as “a cultural and advocacy event designed to engage young people and the wider public through music, advocacy, campaigns, and performances by international and regional artists.”
This segment of the summit is expected to bring a high level of energy and public participation to the CHOGM proceedings, ensuring the impact of the meeting is felt far beyond the conference rooms.
Beyond the immediate excitement of the summit, this partnership represents a strategic investment in the long-term prosperity of Antigua and Barbuda.
By positioning the nation at the intersection of global policy and digital innovation, the government is ensuring that local youth remain at the forefront of the modern economy.
This collaboration not only showcases the country’s capacity to host world-class events but also reinforces a lasting legacy of opportunity and connectivity for the next generation of leaders.
