Windwards Close – By Samuel Peters
Windwards Close Series Run
The Windward Islands are now just one victory away from clinching the bilateral series after handing the Leeward Islands Tropical Wave a 30-run defeat on Tuesday at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in the ongoing CWI Rising Stars Under-16 Tournament.
Despite showing promise, the home side faltered under pressure, with inconsistent batting leading to regular wickets and ultimately costing them a strong position in the match.
Batting first, the Windward Islands posted 167 in 36 overs, with Derwin Lewis top-scoring with 28. He was well supported by Jershaun Joseph (27), Ahmaud Williams (26), and Ahmar Lavai (23), as the visitors built a competitive total.
For the Leewards, Aedan Williams was the standout with the ball, finishing with four for 40, while Kamari France provided valuable support with three for 23.
In reply, the Leeward Islands got off to a shaky start, slipping to 12 for two after captain Karese Farrell and De’Morae Prentice were both dismissed by the impressive Dylan John.
A recovery effort followed as Aedan Williams (33) and Deshawn James (29) combined to add 55 runs for the third wicket, guiding the team to 67 for two at the interval and putting the hosts in a promising position.
However, the momentum shifted immediately after the break when Williams was bowled off the very first delivery, triggering a collapse. The Windward Islands seized control, with Kaleb Charles removing both set batters to put the home side on the back foot.
Captain Joseph, who was named Man of the Match, led from the front with figures of two for 21. He was supported by John (2-22), Nian Davis (3-17), and Charles (2-27) in a disciplined bowling effort.
The Leeward Islands were eventually bowled out for 137 in 39.3 overs, falling 30 runs short.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday at the same venue from 9:30 AM, with the match set to be streamed live on YouTube.
