Governor General Issues Proclamation
By Statutory Instrument 2026, No.33 dated 31st March 2026, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams issued the Proclamation to dissolve the Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda effective Wednesday 1st April 2026.
This dissolution marks the official trigger for a general election, which Prime Minister Gaston Browne has declared, in his bid to secure a new mandate ahead of the five-year time-span which would have led to the polls being held in 2028.
The move follows recent shifts in the political landscape, including the election of Rawdon Turner, which followed the demise of then St Peter MP Asot Michael; Anthony Smith’s controversial departure from the UPP under whose aegis he secured the win in the All Saints West Constituency; and Randy Baltimore’s recent by-election victory in St Philip’s North for the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party.
With the Governor-General’s proclamation, the nation will move into a formal election cycle. While the government transitions, the public is anticipating a polling date within the month of April, as the country prepares to decide its leadership for the next five years.
