Land Remains Top Issue

Barbuda Peoples Movement (BPM) representative Trevor Walker said that land rights remain the main concern for the people of Barbuda ahead of the April 30 general election.

Speaking after nomination day, yesterday, Walker said his party has been campaigning on the ground for the past two weeks and the public response prior to elections has been positive.

“And we’re quite encouraged and happy with the kind of responses we’re getting from electorate,” he said.

Walker said that during his conversations with voters, many people said they are concerned about the government’s land policies.

“Speaking to people on the ground, a lot of people are very concerned and very anti the Labour Party’s policies for Barbuda. Of course, Barbuda’s land has always been and still is at the centre of our campaign.

Persons are concerned; persons don’t want the government to interfere with our lands. Persons are concerned that the government doesn’t have the people of Barbuda’s best interests at heart with the type of, the amount of lands they’re taking up for certain types of development, etc. So they really want to make sure that they have a say in our development.”

Walker said the BPM wants to maintain power to act as a check and balance for the people of Barbuda.

He said everyone should go out and vote when the time comes.
