abec reminds public election - ABEC reminds public of Election Day alco

Abec Reminds – The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) is reminding the public of legal restrictions on the sale and distribution of alcohol ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Abec Reminds Public Election

Public Relations Officer of ABEC, Elisa Graham, made the reminder during Observer Media’s programme, Big Issues, on Sunday.

Citing provisions under the Representation of the People Act, Graham said no intoxicating liquor shall be sold, offered for sale, or given away at any premises situated in any constituency where an election is being held during polling hours.

“No intoxicating liquor shall be sold, offered for sale, or given away at any premises situated in any constituency in which an election is being held, at any time between the opening and closing of the polls on polling day,” she said.

Graham warned that breaches of the law carry penalties under the Act.

“Any person who contravenes the provisions of this section shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine of $3,000 and to imprisonment for 12 months,” she added.

The Commission is urging full compliance with the regulations on polling day.
