Man Compensate Neighbour 20K
A New Winthorpes man who shattered his neighbour’s arm with a large piece of wood has been ordered to pay his victim $20,000 in compensation, nearly four years after the attack.
Donneil Anthony, who was 37 at the time of the incident, appeared before the High Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on his neighbour.
On the morning of June 12th, 2022, Hampson was walking in New Winthorpes when he noticed Anthony cursing and moving in his direction. Anthony suddenly ran past him and into a nearby yard. Hampson thought nothing of it and continued on his way until he felt a sudden and violent blow to his left arm. He ran to avoid being struck again and turned to see Anthony pursuing him with a large piece of wood. A bystander stepped in and chased Anthony away, allowing the injured Hampson to rest by a nearby tree before being taken to hospital by ambulance.
An X-ray revealed a fracture of the bone in Hampson’s left arm, which required a cast and to eventually undergo surgery. On June 20th, 2022, he underwent a procedure during which metal plates and screws were inserted into the arm to repair the damage.
Hampson was 44 years old at the time of the attack. Both men live in the same neighbourhood and knew each other but the reason for the attack is still unclear.
In sentencing, the court ordered Anthony to pay Hampson $20,000 in compensation. He must pay $5,000 by today, with the remainder to be paid in monthly instalments of $1,000 beginning from the last working day of next month. Should he fail to meet those payments, Anthony faces six months in prison.
