Double Victories – By Samuel Peters
Double Victories Uwi Over
It was a night of celebration for The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus on Wednesday, as both their women’s and men’s teams secured victories in the Antigua and Barbuda Amateur Volleyball Association League at the YMCA Sports Complex.
In the opening encounter of the evening, the UWI women were pushed to the limit by a determined Royals squad that battled hard for every set and point. Royals took the first set 25-19, but UWI responded strongly, winning the second and third sets 25-19 and 25-23 to take control of the match.
Royals, however, refused to go away quietly and forced a deciding fifth set after edging the fourth 26-24. But UWI found another gear in the final set, producing a composed and spirited finish to win 15-8 and claim the match 3-2.
In the men’s division, UWI delivered a more clinical performance against Velocity. They opened with a 25-20 win before Velocity levelled the contest by taking the second set 25-22. UWI quickly regained their momentum, capturing a tightly contested third set 28-26 before closing out the match in dominant fashion with a 25-16 fourth-set victory.
The double triumph capped off an impressive evening for UWI Five Islands, with both teams showing resilience, composure, and quality on the court.
