Grenades Take Top Spot
Jennings Grenades returned to the top of the Antigua and Barbuda Premier League on Wednesday without having to take the field, after their scheduled opponents, Old Road, defaulted the fixture.
The former defending champions were ready for action but were informed that Old Road would not contest the match. The default handed Grenades maximum points and moved them clear at the summit of the Premier League standings, breaking their tie with All Saints United, who remained on 53 points.
The outcome came as a surprise, especially considering Old Road’s previous outing, where they produced a dominant attacking display by scoring 14 goals against Jennings United.
Meanwhile, in First Division football, Greenbay Hoppers staged a comeback to defeat neighbours Five Islands 2-1. Five Islands took the lead through Jaheim Jeremy, but Hoppers responded through Khimani Cox, who equalised in the 35th minute before completing his brace with the winning goal in the 85th minute.
Willikies also secured a narrow victory, edging SAP 1-0. Jason Harris scored the decisive goal in the 61st minute to give Willikies all three points.
Bendals were also awarded a victory on the day, as FC Masterballers defaulted their scheduled encounter.
