Social Media Celebrates Popular
“Free the Goose.” “Freedom is a must.” “Finally.” Those were just some of the messages flooded social media yesterday as news broke that popular tattoo artist and influencer Oszie Kelvin Russell, known as ‘Mongoose,’ had walked free from prison.
Russell’s sentence began in April 2025, when he was handed three years and six months for possession of an unlicensed 9mm Glock pistol, ammunition, and a suppressor. Police found the items during a search of his Lightfoot residence, where he allegedly attempted to dispose of evidence through a bedroom window as officers announced themselves.
His sentence was cut down after he was named among five men who won a joint appeal in March, when the Court of Appeal found the sentencing magistrate had wrongly applied the totality principle, improperly tacking extra months onto each man’s term. Russell’s sentence was reduced to one year, 10 months and 20 days, clearing the way for yesterday’s release.
The appeal, argued by Alexander and attorney Andrew Okola, also benefited Malique Challenger, Ricardo Howell, Jeson Cedeno, and Jamal Prince, all convicted on separate firearms offences.
