Legendary West Indies batsman and Antiguan, Sir Vivian Richards, said scenes at the North Sound venue named in his honour over the past week, have been nothing short of amazing as members of the public turned out in their numbers to support the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons and Caribbean Premier League (CPL) cricket on a whole.
“They’re representing our country and what I think is so important as well too, I got to big our supporters up and all who came to the game. It was such a great night and it goes to show if everything is done properly, how passionate we are about our sports. I think every professional sports person appreciates that and everyone wants to make sure that night, that I’m the one who comes out best; and you don’t want to fail tonight because of the capacity of the crowd in itself, You want to make sure that you don’t mock-up,” he said.
Close to 10,000 fans watched Sunday night’s match between Falcons and the Guyana Amazon Warriors while a little over 7,000 were present at the North Sound venue for last Saturday’s clash against the Trinbago Kight Riders. A little over 5000 seats were occupied during the first home game against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots last Thursday.
Sir Viv expressed some satisfaction with what he has seen so far from the home team but believes some areas can be improved.
“Maybe, just a little bit more match awareness at times but I think all the teams are pretty good teams. It’s a tight competition and when we won against Trinidad, I felt that we had lost it somewhere in the middle but it goes to show you that this team goes deep and just the finish against Trinidad, no one expected that and how quickly it came because of what was taking place, just before that. It goes to show you that they’re pretty much resilient and so long as you continue to believe, you’re going to have your ups and downs. But when you’re down that you can come back with a bang and certainly they have done that,” he said.
The Antigua and Barbuda Falcons were slated to round off their quota of home matches against the Barbados Tridents on Tuesday night.
