Caribbean governments and institutions should urgently adopt artificial intelligence to boost public safety, revolutionize education, and streamline public services, a regional technology specialist said.
In an interview on Observer AM, Tim Teemal, a use-case AI specialist, said the region faces a pivotal moment to lead digital innovation rather than follow external models. He stressed that AI represents the greatest opportunity for regional development in human history if leaders embrace it proactively.
Teemal outlined several open-source and low-cost tools his team developed, including a multilingual voice-to-form reporting platform designed to address regional crime and public service issues. The platform allows citizens to submit reports anonymously using voice commands, bypassing language and dialect barriers while generating real-time data heat maps for local authorities.
Beyond security, Teemal pointed to specialized AI tutoring platforms tailored to primary school, CSEC, and CAPE curricula. The free tools adapt to individual learning speeds and accommodate neurodivergent students, serving thousands of users across Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.
He also highlighted guidance platforms created to consolidate fragmented government services and tourism information into single-point digital concierges. Teemal called on regional leaders and decision-makers to overcome political hesitation, engage youth with hands-on technical training, and build lasting digital infrastructure across the islands.
