Over 200 – More than 3,200 people have signed an online petition calling on Prime Minister Gaston Browne and his Cabinet to protect public access and parking at Jolly Harbour Beach.

The petition, titled “Protect Public Access to Jolly Harbour,” had attracted 3,287 verified signatures and more than 4,200 shares at the time of publication, reflecting growing concern over access to the popular west coast beach.
Those behind the petition are asking the government to preserve what they describe as long-standing and practical public access to the beach, including adequate parking for people using the area.
“This petition is about much more than a parking lot,” the petition states, arguing that the wider concern is whether Antiguans will continue to have convenient access to beaches as development expands around the country’s coastline.
According to the petition, the parking area has been used for decades by Antiguans and Barbudans, residents, visitors, yacht owners, villa guests, local businesses and tourists.
The petitioners contend that as access to the area becomes more restricted, it is becoming increasingly difficult for members of the public to enjoy a beach they regard as part of the country’s shared heritage.
They also point to the history of the wider Jolly Harbour area, saying archaeological evidence indicates that people have occupied and used the coastline for thousands of years.
The petition acknowledges the importance of tourism and private investment to Antigua and Barbuda’s economy and makes clear that its supporters are not opposing development.
Instead, it argues that development should take place alongside measures that safeguard the public’s ability to reach and enjoy the country’s beaches.
“We support responsible investment and thoughtful development,” the petition states. “However, development should be planned in a way that protects public access and respects the rights of the people who call Antigua and Barbuda home.”
The petition specifically asks the Browne administration to ensure that practical public access and adequate parking remain part of the future development of Jolly Harbour Beach.
It also calls for the same principle to be considered in future developments along Antigua and Barbuda’s coastline, warning that decisions being made today could determine how easily future generations are able to access the country’s beaches.
Organisers are encouraging people who sign the petition to explain why beach access matters to them and to share it further in an effort to bring the issue to the attention of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
With 3,287 verified signatures already recorded, the petition has become the latest expression of the wider public debate in Antigua and Barbuda over coastal development and what practical public access to the nation’s beaches should look like.
