Saharan Dust Push Antigua
Another surge of Saharan dust is expected to blanket Antigua and Barbuda heading into the weekend, prompting health officials to urge residents, particularly those with respiratory and heart conditions, to reduce their exposure outdoors.
The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service says air quality is forecast to deteriorate to levels considered unhealthy for sensitive groups from Friday sunset through Saturday sunrise.
Forecasters have linked the deterioration to the 29th notable surge of Saharan dust to affect the country so far in 2026.
The dust is expected to increase concentrations of fine particulate matter, including PM2.5 and PM10, with the Air Quality Index forecast to range between 101 and 130. An Air Pollution Alert Level III has been issued.
While the overall health risk is assessed as medium, the Met Office says people with asthma and other respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular conditions and allergies could experience health effects. Children, elderly residents and people prone to eye or skin irritation may also be more vulnerable.
The bulletin warns of an increased likelihood of respiratory symptoms among sensitive individuals and the possible aggravation of existing heart or lung disease.
Residents are being encouraged to exercise caution, with sensitive groups advised to limit the amount of time they spend outdoors and restrict strenuous outdoor activity.
People are also being advised to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible and, when venturing outside, consider wearing a face mask capable of filtering PM2.5 particles.
The Meteorological Service is urging the public to continue monitoring official updates as conditions develop.
