The Antigua and Barbuda government plans to begin construction of a new prison at Potworks with capacity for approximately 150 inmates as it moves toward replacing the centuries-old facility in St. John’s.
New Potworks Prison Begin
The new correctional facility, to be located at the Prison Farm, is expected to be developed in phases, allowing its capacity and services to expand over time.
The project forms part of the government’s wider effort to modernize the country’s correctional system and improve conditions for both inmates and prison officers.
Government has also hired a consultant to review prison operations, with particular attention being given to rehabilitation and reducing repeat offending.
The planned Potworks facility would eventually allow authorities to move away from the existing His Majesty’s Prison in St. John’s, which has operated for centuries and has long faced concerns about its aging infrastructure.
