Hangzhou University Delegation Strengthens Medical Ties with Antigua and Barbuda

A delegation from the Caribbean Studies Centre at Hangzhou Normal University has held discussions with Antigua and Barbuda’s Health Minister, Sir Molwyn Joseph, aimed at deepening medical cooperation between the two countries.

The visiting team, led by Professor Zhang Xingwei — a senior clinical academic and director within the university’s affiliated hospital — conveyed greetings from Professor Tang Ruikang, the university’s president. President Tang welcomed Minister Joseph’s engagement and described the visit as an important step in advancing bilateral collaboration.

During the meeting, both sides held what was described as candid and substantive talks on expanding medical partnerships. Seven cooperation agreements were signed, covering areas including the establishment of a Chest Pain Centre, the development of internet-based hospitals, and enhanced medical training.

Sir Molwyn praised the clinical expertise of the university and its affiliated hospital, saying the collaboration marks a significant milestone in Antigua and Barbuda’s international health partnerships. He said the initiative represents the country’s first high-level, systematic commitment to medical cooperation with China and aligns with wider Belt and Road health objectives in the Caribbean.

Professor Zhang said the university, working with the Chinese Embassy in Antigua and Barbuda, will prioritise the implementation of the agreements. He highlighted ongoing work to support the new Chest Pain Centre and expand training for medical personnel, with the aim of improving regional care for cardiovascular diseases.

Officials described the event as laying a strong foundation for long-term cooperation in healthcare, focusing on strengthening Antigua and Barbuda’s capacity to prevent and treat heart-related illnesses, while supporting the development of a global community of health.
