About 600 volunteers have been recruited to support the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda, with organisers saying their duties will include assisting visiting delegations and local attendees.
About 600 Volunteers Recruited
Speaking at Wednesday’s public town hall, a volunteer programme representative said the roster includes roughly 170 delegation liaison officers assigned to assist delegations and VIPs.
Volunteers will support visitors from their arrival at the airport through to departure, while also helping people attending meetings and associated activities.
“I don’t want people to think that the volunteers are just for the foreigners,” the representative said. “The volunteers are to assist anyone who will be coming to CHOGM.”
All volunteers, including delegation liaison officers, must complete five training modules covering the Commonwealth and CHOGM, service excellence, communications, teamwork and professionalism.
They will then receive further instruction tailored to their assigned roles.
Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene emphasised that the preparations involved trained personnel, with several hours devoted to preparing volunteers for their responsibilities.
The explanation followed a question from a member of the public about whether sufficient volunteers, transportation and medical services would be available across the event venues.
Organisers said the volunteer roster was sufficient to support the programme.
Antigua and Barbuda will host CHOGM from November 1 to 4, with government meetings, youth, women’s, people’s and business forums, and cultural activities forming part of the schedule.
