Regional authorities confirm a higher death toll and the evacuation of injured passengers after the RenfeâIryo collision, nine months after Adamuz and 32 days before Spainâs election.
MADRID â At least 30 people were killed and dozens were injured when two high-speed passenger trains collided near Urda in Spainâs Toledo province on Wednesday, October 28, according to regional authorities and Spanish public broadcaster RTVE.
Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the Castilla-La Mancha regional government, said late on Wednesday morning that the authoritiesâ death toll stood at 30 and warned that it could rise. She confirmed that all injured passengers had been removed from the carriages, while recovery operations continued. A consolidated official total of the injured, including a breakdown by severity, had not yet been released.
The collision involved an AVE service operated by state-owned Renfe and a train belonging to private operator Iryo. Infrastructure manager Adif described a rear-end collision near Urda, at kilometre 118 on the MadridâSeville line.
Injured passengers evacuated as emergency response expands
The 112 emergency service recorded the incident at 8:54 a.m. local time, according to Spanish news agency EFE, which reported that two carriages had fallen down an embankment.
Hospitals in Toledo, Ciudad Real and Alcázar de San Juan began receiving injured passengers and suspended non-urgent operations to free capacity, according to EFEâs updated report. Firefighters, Guardia Civil officers, Civil Protection volunteers and medical teams were deployed to the crash site.
The Castilla-La Mancha government raised its PLATECAM emergency plan to Operational Situation 2 at 10:30 a.m. local time and requested support from Spainâs Military Emergencies Unit, the UME. The plan had initially been activated at 9:15 a.m. Medical teams organised triage and hospital transfers, while Urdaâs municipal sports hall was being prepared to assist affected passengers.
The cause of the collision had not been established. The initial description of one train striking another from behind identifies the sequence of the impact, but does not explain why it happened or establish responsibility.
Rail traffic between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia was suspended following the crash. Renfe offered free ticket changes and cancellations for affected services.
Renfe opened 900 10 10 20 for victims and their relatives. Regional authorities also established 900 122 112 for families seeking information about those affected. These assistance lines are separate from routine travel enquiries, which passengers should direct to their train operator.
Adamuz disaster provides a recent, painful precedent
Spain has already suffered a major railway disaster this year. On January 18, a collision near Adamuz in Córdoba province killed 46 people and injured more than 100, according to the Andalusian governmentâs subsequent decree providing assistance to victims.
As Antigua.news reported in its coverage of the January rail disaster at Adamuz, an Iryo service derailed before a collision with a Renfe train. The Transport Ministryâs account established that derailed carriages entered the path of an oncoming Renfe Alvia service on the adjacent track.
Both disasters involved the same two operators on the broad MadridâAndalusia corridor, nine months apart. Their reported collision sequences differ, however: Adamuz followed a derailment into an opposing trainâs path, while the Toledo accident has been described as a rear-end collision. Those similarities do not establish a common cause.
Spainâs railway history also includes the deadly July 2013 Alvia derailment at Angrois, near Santiago de Compostela, when a passenger train left the track on a curve. That accident involved a single train and provides historical context rather than evidence about what happened at Urda.
Crash comes 32 days before Spainâs general election
The disaster has occurred just over a month before Spainâs November 29 general election. Under the election decree, the formal campaign begins on November 13 and ends on November 27, placing Wednesdayâs crash in the pre-election period.
The immediate political response was to suspend scheduled activities. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez cancelled an appearance in Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha president Emiliano GarcÃa-Page cancelled his agenda and headed towards Urda, and the opposition Peopleâs Party suspended its pre-election programme for the day, according to public broadcaster G24âs report.
Politically, the timing could intensify scrutiny of railway safety, infrastructure management and the governmentâs handling of the emergency before voters go to the polls. Establishing the cause of the collision and any responsibility will depend on the investigation.
Information checked at 12:25 CET on October 28, 2026. This is a developing story; the death toll is provisional and an exact official total of the injured has not yet been released.
