Weston and Guyanese professor clash over ‘lack of vision’ comments

Guyana-born intellectual Dr David Hinds has come under fire from Senator Lennox Weston after he accused the ruling Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) administration of having a lack of vision.

Dr Hinds, who is based at the Arizona State University, regularly appears as a guest on a local radio programme in his capacity as Associate Professor of African and Caribbean studies.

“There is very much a lack of vision in where the government wants to take the country and the rhetoric that it’s using to win an election,” Dr Hinds said.

However, in immediate response, Weston said he was taking exception to the criticism.

“I know Dr. Hinds said there is no vision but he doesn’t live in Antigua. We’ve had a vision since VC Bird and the 39ers took Antigua and transformed it.

“I take real exception for him to stay in his comfort to say there is no vision. Come to Antigua to see the transformation in this country. Come look at the history, when you dare to suggest that this country is leaderless and visionless,” Weston said.

“I take grave exception to somebody who is not from Antigua taking real liberty with this country in terms of that kind of commentary and I don’t accept it,” he added.

Dr. Hinds said it is that kind of response from Weston which makes people question the seriousness of leaders towards integration.

He said his comments were not restricted to the Gaston Browne administration but others in the Caribbean who are very short on vision.

Both men were guests on the Big Issues.
