Woman subjected to cavity search before being charged, fined

A young woman faced embarrassment after she was allegedly subjected to a cavity search by police after being arrested for using foul language and behaving rambunctiously.

Anna Lewis was pursued by a female police officer, who was dressed in plain clothes, after leaving a restaurant on Newgate Street, where the offences allegedly occurred.

Reports are that the woman, formerly of Ottos, went into the restaurant and ordered something to eat.

Having placed the order, she reportedly stood in the business waiting for several minutes for her food to be prepared. She also witnessed a number of people who came after her receiving their orders and leaving the restaurant.

Frustrated by what she saw happening, Lewis began to curse loudly and inquired about her food. She was told that it was not ready and she demanded her money back.

Having been given back her money, the young woman, apparently still angry, knocked down some ketchup bottles that were on the counter.

An employee at the business told her not to move, but she told him a bad word and left anyway.

It was at this time that the plain clothed officer followed her and, after identifying herself, took her to St. John’s Police Station where she was allegedly kept in a cell for two days, and faced the horrifying ordeal of enduring a cavity search before being charged with disorderly conduct and making use of indecent language.

Reportedly, the officer was in the establishment at the time when Lewis was misbehaving.

Lewis was taken before a magistrate and was fined $100 for using bad words and $150 for knocking the ketchup bottles off the counter. She had pleaded guilty to the charges. The court gave her until Friday to pay the monies or be jailed for one month.

On the day she was taken into custody, Lewis was expected to leave Antigua via a ferry for Montserrat where she now resides.

She told the officer of her travel plans and begged her repeatedly not to let her miss her trip, however, to no avail.
