LIAT requests funds from government to pay CDB debt

August 31, 2017
in News

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda is being asked to pay LIAT a sum of money to meet its debt to the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

The monies being requested are commensurate with this country’s shareholding. Antigua and Barbuda owns a 34 per cent stake in the regional carrier.

St Vincent owns 12 per cent of the airline; Barbados with a majority share of 51 per cent and Dominica’s with three per cent.

Antigua News Room (ANR) sought confirmation as to whether the other shareholders were also being asked to pay monies equal to their shareholding, but our efforts proved futile up to the time of this publication.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne is on record encouraging other Caribbean countries served by LIAT to purchase shares in the carrier or “to contribute to LIAT’s operations”.

Shareholders of the airline will hold a critical meeting about the company’s operations next Monday.
