“A bunch of jokers”- PM dismisses UPP slate

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has criticised the slate of candidates unveiled on Sunday by the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) at a Special General Council.

Browne’s message to political leader of the UPP Harold Lovell is to “wheel and come again”.

Twelve new candidates make up the slate of the UPP with four of whom can be termed veterans, of which one is female-the sole female contesting on the opposition’s ticket.

Browne said the UPP candidates bring nothing to the table, and added that some of them have pending matters before the court or have had previous run ins with the law.

He noted that nobody will take them (the UPP candidates) seriously.

“When you look at our opponents they are a bunch of jokers, you see the team that was rolled out by the UPP? That is supposed to be our most significant political opponents?

“I mean when you look at that team you have individuals who are before the court on charges of wrong doing, you have individuals who are known to ONDCP (Office of National Drug Control and Money Laundering Policy)…you have about 12 of the 17 candidates who do not have an education, a secondary education, people who have not achieved anything in their lives, people who obviously do not have the capacity to represent anyone, so as far as we are concerned they are not ready. They need to wheel and come again, and then we will take them seriously,” the prime minister said on state television.
