Opposition ready to battle gov’t in court over NAMCo

November 17, 2017
in News

An opposition party is willing to take the government to court on the National Asset Management Company (NAMCo) issue.

Recently in parliament, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced that monies garnered from public corporations will be privately managed by NAMCo but there will be no public disclosure about these funds.

This revelation has sparked outrage with the opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) calling for the body, overseen by Cabinet ministers, to be scrapped.

“And we are willing to even challenge it in court should that need arise. If necessary, absolutely, we have very little time to play with because elections are going to be before April ,” Damani Tabor, public relations officer (PRO) of the UPP, said on radio.

However, Antigua News Room (ANR) asked him how long will the party take before pursing legal action, and he responded that a timeline has not yet been disclosed.

Tabor said the NAMCo issue is a clear indication that Prime Minister Browne is not “really an advocate of entrepreneurial socialism”, but a communist at heart.

He said members of the public should be told what is taking place with the monies obtained through NAMCo.

Tabor said the nation should not be comforted by the fact that the government is reaping profits and can do anything it wants with the money without any transparency.

The UPP senator noted that the opposition, on behalf of the people of Antigua and Barbuda, should be able to look at NAMCo’s records and see how the monies are being spent.

While the government has said that NAMCo is a private company and its accounts will not be made public, it also said that it (the government) will be accountable to parliament on the investments made under the venture.
