No Unusual Increase in Mosquito‑Borne Diseases, Public Health Surveillance Confirms

January 14, 2026
in News, Sport

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment and Civil Service Affairs advises the public that there is no outbreak or unusual increase in mosquito‑borne diseases in Antigua and Barbuda at this time.

The Ministry maintains continuous national surveillance for mosquito‑borne diseases, including Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, Yellow Fever, and Oropouche virus, through established public health monitoring systems. All indicators currently remain within expected baseline levels.

Dengue Fever, which is the most commonly detected mosquito‑borne disease locally, experienced increased activity in 2023. Surveillance data confirm that since that period, Dengue case numbers have returned to and remained within expected limits, with no cases recorded to date in 2026.

At the same time, surveillance of other mosquito‑borne diseases continues to show very low or no activity. Zika virus activity has been minimal, with only two cases identified in 2025 and none detected so far in 2026, while no cases of Chikungunya, Yellow Fever, or Oropouche virus have been recorded during this period.

Although there is no public health emergency, the Ministry emphasises that preventing mosquito‑borne diseases requires ongoing action and shared responsibility. Vector control activities, including routine inspections, larval source reduction, and targeted control measures, are continuously underway in communities. These efforts are supported by regular waste collection and environmental management, coordinated with the relevant national agencies.

Members of the public are encouraged to strengthen household prevention measures, including removing standing water, properly covering water storage containers, disposing of unwanted items responsibly, and cooperating with vector control teams during routine inspections.

The Ministry assures the public that public health surveillance operates continuously, and that any change in disease activity or risk will be communicated promptly through official channels.

The Ministry thanks the public for its cooperation and partnership in protecting the health of all residents of Antigua and Barbuda.
