Massiah Raises Concerns Over U.S. Immigration Policy Impact on Antigua and Barbuda

Joanne Massiah, leader of the Democratic National Alliance (DNA), has warned that recent immigration policy actions by the United States could have far-reaching consequences for households, businesses and the Antiguan and Barbudan diaspora, describing the situation as one that touches “every sector” of the country.

In her New Year’s message to the nation, Massiah said the policy decision — announced less than two weeks ago — had sent shockwaves across Antigua and Barbuda, raising anxiety among citizens at home and abroad about its potential economic and social fallout .

She cautioned that any restrictions affecting Antiguan and Barbudan passport holders risk disrupting travel, trade, family connections and livelihoods, particularly for those with close ties to the United States.

Massiah said concerns have been raised by citizens from across political and social lines, questioning whether the situation could have been avoided and whether it was handled with sufficient diplomatic care. She noted that while she expects engagement with Washington to eventually lead to a resolution, the public remains uneasy about what concessions the country may be forced to make in order to have the policy eased or reversed .

The DNA leader argued that small island states must approach foreign relations with caution and restraint, stressing that diplomacy requires “sobriety and wisdom” at all times, particularly when addressing powerful international partners. She suggested that missteps in tone or messaging on the global stage can carry serious consequences for vulnerable economies such as Antigua and Barbuda’s .

Despite the uncertainty, Massiah urged calm and unity, calling on Antiguans and Barbudans to remain focused on the country’s long-term interests. She reiterated that the DNA supports diplomatic engagement as the path forward, while insisting that national decisions must always be guided by accountability, foresight and respect for the well-being of citizens at home and in the diaspora .

She closed by appealing for collective resolve, saying the nation’s strength lies in unity and a shared commitment to safeguarding Antigua and Barbuda’s future in an increasingly complex global environment.
