Local contractors invited to bid for CDB-funded road rehabilitation

January 9, 2026
in News, Sport

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has invited local contractors to submit bids for major road and drainage works under an expanded Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)-funded infrastructure programme.

The works form part of the Antigua and Barbuda Road Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project (ARRIP) Additional Loan Project, which aims to upgrade carriageways, sidewalks and drainage along Friars Hill Road and the Sir George Walter Highway.

Officials say the project is designed to tackle long-standing flooding and drainage problems that have affected traffic flow, public safety and nearby businesses, particularly in the Woods Mall area and along sections of the Sir George Walter Highway.

The programme is being implemented by the Ministry of Works through its Project Implementation Management Unit (PIMU), with technical support from contracted consultants responsible for project design, tendering, evaluation and construction supervision.

The Ministry of Works has opened bidding for three major construction packages. Package One covers Friars Hill Road from the Cedar Grove Roundabout to the Link Road connecting to Marble Hill Road. Package Three includes works from Summer Lane Junction to the YMCA roundabout, while Package Four focuses on the Sir George Walter Highway between Airport Junction and the Old Parham Road Junction.

Across all packages, the scope of work includes major drainage upgrades, the construction of reinforced concrete culverts and drains, retaining walls and sidewalks, improvements to bus shelters, and the reinstatement of road shoulders.

The government says a key objective of the project is to strengthen road resilience and reduce persistent flooding. Each construction package is expected to be completed within eighteen weeks once contracts are awarded.

Bidding is open to local contractors only, who must submit full qualification information as part of their bids. Details of the qualification requirements are outlined in the tender documents.

Bids must be submitted in hard copy to the Procurement Board at the Project Implementation Management Unit on Upper Corn Alley, St John’s, or electronically by email no later than 2:00 p.m. on 5 March 2026. Late submissions will not be accepted, and bids must remain valid for ninety days.

Requests for clarification must be submitted by 4:00 p.m. on 19 February 2026, with responses provided in writing. Additional tender information is available on the government’s website.

A pre-bid meeting and site visit are scheduled for 29 January at 10:00 a.m. at the PIMU Conference Room on Upper Corn Alley, allowing prospective bidders to review project requirements and site conditions ahead of submitting proposals.
