Sir Molwyn Reports “Welcome Developments” as Cancer Centre Begins Major Upgrade

November 18, 2025
in News, Sport

Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph says significant progress is underway at the Antigua and Barbuda Cancer Centre, with outdated equipment now being removed and preparations beginning for the installation of new radiation technology.

Speaking on the Browne and Browne show, Sir Molwyn described the recent activity as “welcome developments,” noting that he personally observed several pieces of old equipment already taken out of the facility. He said ensuring public safety was the first priority as the decommissioning work began.

“We have checked it—there is no radioactive material there,” he said. “Nobody will get cancer, nobody will get radiation, and the equipment is being secured.”

Sir Molwyn said the removal phase will continue over the next several weeks as the government prepares the building to receive modern radiation machinery. He provided what he called a “conservative” timeline, projecting that by the first quarter of next year—“up to March”—the new equipment should be fully installed and the centre able to reopen for clinical services.

He said the upgrades mark an important step forward for Antigua and Barbuda’s oncology care, describing the investment as essential for meeting national and regional demand for radiation treatment.

Sir Molwyn also linked the project to the broader strengthening of the country’s health system. He said that after completing the Cancer Centre upgrade, the government intends to advance plans for improved cardiology services and is working to secure a neurosurgeon to serve Antigua and the wider OECS.

The Cancer Centre has been closed for some time following the shutdown of radiation treatment services. The government’s newly announced progress is expected to restore a critical pillar of specialty care to the country once renovations and installation work are completed.
