Antigua and Barbuda Government to Revamp Litter Warden Programme

October 5, 2025
in News, Sport

The government is set to overhaul the Litter Warden Programme amid public criticism over its visibility and effectiveness in tackling illegal dumping across Antigua and Barbuda.

Director of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant, said the initiative is being “completely revitalised” to improve accountability and on-the-ground impact.

“People are asking, ‘Where are they? Do we have any?’” Merchant said. “Steps are being taken to ensure wardens are properly trained, equipped, and deployed where they are most needed.”

The wardens play a key role in monitoring communities, identifying dump sites and reporting offenders, but residents have complained that few are seen in action.

Merchant said the reforms will strengthen coordination with agencies such as the National Solid Waste Management Authority and the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force, which leads the national cleanup campaign.

He added that the move forms part of a wider effort to improve enforcement, data collection and public education on environmental protection.
