Fitches Creek Clean-Up Sees Three Skips of Bulk Waste Removed

ESFN and West Magic Bins Plus Team Up to Clean Up with FCRA

The EcoShores Sustainable Futures Network (ESFN), in partnership with West Magic Bins Plus and the Fitches Creek Residents Association (FCRA) recently teamed up for a Bulk Waste Clean up in the Fitches Creek Community.

As part of this initiative, residents collectively removed three skips of bulk waste, including discarded materials and household items, significantly improving the cleanliness and environmental health of the community.

This effort represents a key milestone to support the Building a Community Constituency for Conservation project, now in its final stages. Throughout the life of the project, Fitches Creek residents have been provided with opportunities to actively engage in conservation action, environmental education, and shared responsibility for the spaces they inhabit.

Situated within the North East Marine Management Area (NEMMA), the Fitches Creek community plays a critical role in safeguarding vital wetland ecosystems. As the community looks towards World Wetlands Day 2026, it acknowledges that these habitats support species such as the West Indian whistling duck, herons and other wetland-dependent birds.

Community-led interventions, including the placement of water lilies, have contributed to improved wetland health, enhanced water quality, and safer habitats that allow biodiversity to flourish.

Project Manager, Britney McDonald underscored the broader impact of the initiative, stating, “This clean-up goes beyond waste removal. It reflects a growing sense of pride, ownership, and environmental responsibility within the Fitches Creek community. When residents actively participate, biodiversity conservation becomes a shared value that delivers real, visible results.”

The Bulk Waste Clean-Up serves as a supplementary effort to previous support received by the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), reinforcing national waste management objectives through strong community participation.

As the new year begins, the initiative sends a timely message of renewal, preparation, and environmental care from the private sector. McDonald highlighted the importance of partnership and shared responsibility, stating, “this collaboration shows what is possible when the private sector, civil society and communities work together.

The Fitches Creek residents are doing their part to ensure Antigua and Barbuda is kept clean, and we are proud to have waste management entities like West Magic Bins Plus setting a positive example for waste management and corporate social responsibility. Together we are demonstrating the message that keeping our land and marine spaces clean is everyone’s responsibility.”

The EcoShores Sustainable Futures Network (ESFN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability, environmental conservation, and community empowerment across Small Island Developing States (SIDS). ESFN works to address key challenges, including climate justice, biodiversity, youth development, technology innovation, and education.

Through initiatives such as the ESFN Volunteer Explorer Program, World Wetlands Day Awareness, Build Your Future, Community Swim Program, and the Endeavour Publication. ESFN fosters innovative solutions and inspires action to protect marine and coastal ecosystems. ESFN strives to create a more resilient and sustainable future for all.

ESFN has committed to supporting creative media and cultural expression of vulnerable communities with a focus on youth. ESFN’s work spans across the Caribbean including Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Jamaica to begin transformation action.
