Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to the Holy See, Sir David Shoul, attended the Vatican’s traditional New Year’s exchange with Pope Leo XIV and the Diplomatic Corps, where he was accorded a high seat of honour.

The gathering, held on January 9 at the Vatican, marked Pope Leo XIV’s first time officiating at the annual event as Head of the Holy See. The meeting is considered one of the Vatican’s most significant diplomatic engagements, offering a platform for discussion on global affairs.

Sir David described the occasion as both an honour and a spiritually fulfilling experience, noting the importance of representing Antigua and Barbuda before the Pope, senior clergy and members of the international diplomatic community.

He said Pope Leo XIV addressed a range of global challenges, including peace and security, climate change, nuclear risks, ethical governance, respect for the poor and vulnerable, and the situations in Haiti and Venezuela. More than 400 diplomats representing over 180 countries attended.

During his visit, Sir David also took part in a meeting of Commonwealth diplomats accredited to the Holy See, organised by His Majesty’s Ambassador, Chris Trott, which included discussions with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.

In his remarks, Sir David conveyed greetings from Prime Minister Gaston Browne and reiterated Antigua and Barbuda’s support for the Pope’s calls for peace, human dignity and justice.

He highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s role as host of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) from November 1 to 4, 2026, under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” with a focus on issues affecting Small Island Developing States. He also noted strong enthusiasm for the appointment of Sir Vivian Richards as Special CHOGM Envoy.

Sir David further reaffirmed the country’s commitment to climate advocacy following its participation in COP30, stressing the need for predictable and accessible support for Small Island Developing States.

He said diplomacy rooted in compassion and justice remains essential to addressing global challenges.
