Pringle Credits Late Speaker Sir Gerald Watt With Shaping His Early Years in Parliament

Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle on Tuesday said he was forced to learn quickly in Parliament under the firm leadership of former Speaker Sir Gerald Watt KC, crediting the late jurist with shaping his development as a legislator.

Pringle was speaking during a parliamentary sitting in which members paid tribute to Sir Gerald, who died last week at the age of 86.

He told the House that he entered Parliament as a “rookie,” facing significant challenges, particularly as the lone representative of the United Progressive Party at the time. Pringle said Sir Gerald’s strict enforcement of parliamentary rules and procedures meant he had no choice but to mature rapidly.

According to Pringle, Sir Gerald insisted that members raising points of order be able to cite the Standing Orders precisely and required that all claims made in the House be supported by evidence. He said that approach forced him to grow quickly and sharpen his understanding of parliamentary debate.

Despite frequent disagreements and exchanges across the floor, Pringle said their interactions were never personal. He described Sir Gerald as someone who clearly separated his duties as Speaker from personal relationships, even during moments of sharp disagreement.

Pringle also recalled a private conversation with Sir Gerald following a heated debate, during which the former Speaker advised him that while he had passion, taking guidance would allow him to become an exceptional politician.

He said Sir Gerald’s insistence on discipline, fairness and evidence-based debate reflected his legal background and his commitment to upholding the integrity of Parliament.

Pringle described Sir Gerald as a patriot of Antigua and Barbuda who acted in what he believed to be the best interests of the country, regardless of political differences.

On behalf of his colleagues, the opposition leader extended condolences to Sir Gerald’s family, saying the House’s thoughts and prayers were with them during their time of loss.
