in News, Sport

The chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission has paid tribute to the late Sir Gerald Watt, describing his contribution to the country’s democratic development as enduring and deeply significant.

In a New Year’s Day message, Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission Chairman His Excellency Ambassador Arthur G.B. Thomas said the Commission reflected not only on the year ahead, but also on those whose work helped shape Antigua and Barbuda’s democratic institutions.

“The Commission pays special homage to the late Sir Gerald Watt, whose unwavering commitment to democratic consolidation, constitutionalism, and public service stands as an enduring example,” Thomas said.

He said Sir Gerald’s death was “deeply felt” and noted that his role in strengthening democratic institutions remains significant.

“His contribution to the strengthening of our democratic institutions cannot be diminished,” Thomas said.

The tribute was included as part of a broader reflection on democracy as a continuing process, with the Electoral Commission reaffirming its responsibility to preserve public trust and institutional integrity.

Thomas said the Commission remains committed to working with citizens “in a spirit of openness, consultation, and shared responsibility” as it seeks to ensure democratic institutions remain credible and responsive in the years ahead.
