The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) is reminding the public that the sale and distribution of intoxicating liquor is prohibited during polling hours on election day ahead of next week’s St. Philip’s North by-election.
Abec Reminds Public Liquor
The commission said the restriction is outlined under the Representation of the People Act (Cap. 379), which states that no intoxicating liquor shall be sold, offered for sale, or given away at any premises situated in a constituency where an election is being held during the period between the opening and closing of the poll.
According to the law, any person who contravenes the provision commits an offence and may be liable on summary conviction to a fine of $3,000 or imprisonment for 12 months.
The St. Philip’s North by-election, set for March 16, will see Alex Browne of the United Progressive Party (UPP) contesting the seat against Randy Baltimore of the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP).
The seat became vacant following the retirement of Sir Robin Yearwood.
