Antigua and Barbuda Flag Raised at NYC Ceremony Led by Commissioner Maginley-Liddie
The New York City Department of Correction joined several city agencies on Wednesday for a historic flag-raising ceremony at Bowling Green to mark Antigua and Barbuda’s 44th Independence Day.
The event, held in partnership with the Mayor’s Office for International Affairs and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs, marked the first time the twin-island nation’s flag has been formally raised in New York City.
Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie, who was born in Antigua and became the second Black woman and first Antiguan to lead the department when she was appointed in December 2023, led the celebration alongside DOC executive leadership, members of the Association of Caribbean Americans in Correction and other dignitaries.
“Being raised in Antigua shaped who I am, what I believe, and everything I do. It helped form me as a person, as an attorney, and as the proud Commissioner of the New York City Department of Correction,” Maginley-Liddie said. She added that her worldview was shaped on “all 108 square miles” of the island.
Maginley-Liddie said the values she associates with being Antiguan — including community responsibility, service and concern for others — are reflected throughout the department. “That is one of the reasons I am so happy to celebrate today with my Boldest Family,” she said.
