Antigua and Barbuda Signals Interest in Deepening Ties with Sweden and Japan

Antigua and Barbuda is looking to deepen its diplomatic engagement with Sweden and Japan, as part of a broader effort to expand the country’s international relationships beyond its traditional partners.

Foreign Affairs Minister EP Chet Greene, speaking during the 2026 Budget Debate, referenced both countries while outlining what he described as standing and developing diplomatic arrangements, signalling the government’s intention to strengthen ties with key global partners.

While Greene did not announce new agreements or appointments involving either Sweden or Japan, his remarks placed both countries within the government’s wider diplomatic strategy, which has increasingly focused on expanding Antigua and Barbuda’s global footprint.

Japan was highlighted as a long-standing partner with which Antigua and Barbuda maintains active engagement.

Greene indicated that the relationship remains important as the government continues to pursue stronger international cooperation in trade, development and diplomatic outreach.

Sweden was similarly referenced as part of Antigua and Barbuda’s growing diplomatic network, reflecting an interest in closer engagement with European partners.

No specific initiatives were detailed during the debate, but Greene’s comments suggested that relations with Sweden remain on the government’s radar as it looks to broaden its external partnerships.

The minister’s remarks came amid a wider presentation that included updates on new diplomatic postings, visa agreements and efforts to reposition Antigua and Barbuda as an active participant in international affairs.

Government officials have increasingly framed diplomacy as a tool not only for political engagement, but also for economic opportunity, mobility and development, particularly for small island states seeking to diversify partnerships in a changing global landscape.

Greene did not indicate when further steps involving Sweden or Japan might be taken, but his comments underscored the government’s intention to continue expanding Antigua and Barbuda’s diplomatic reach.
