Antigua Carnival 2026 Officially

The Antigua and Barbuda Festivals Commission officially launched Carnival 2026 last night, at the State Insurance Conference Room, where they unveiled the theme “Feel the Rhythm”. The media event brought together government officials, corporate sponsors, artists, and carnival enthusiasts.

Scheduled to run from July 25 to August 4, the two-week festival, according to organizers, promises the greatest summer celebration in the Caribbean, with a packed schedule of events beginning as early as April.

Minister of Education, Sports, and Creative Industries, Daryll Matthew, described the theme as a deliberate reflection of the nation’s cultural soul.

“Carnival is the heartbeat of our culture, and it’s a powerful expression of our emancipation, our identity and our creativity,” Matthew said. “Our theme this year captures the essence of our Carnival — it’s energetic, it’s deeply rooted, it’s expressive, and it is unmistakably Antiguan.”

The minister also outlined an ambitious tourism target, announcing that the commission aims to attract no fewer than 10,000 international visitors for the 2026 season, citing increased airlift and record participation figures from Carnival 2025 as evidence that the goal is achievable.

The commission will partner with the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority to execute data-driven marketing campaigns across key international source markets.

Pre-carnival activations are set to begin with a public launch on April 11 at Rising Sun Grounds, followed by Rhythm Fridays starting May 29. The Calypso Monarch quarterfinals are scheduled for June 26 and 27, with the Party Monarch quarterfinals and finals on July 3. Junior events, including the Mr and Miss Teenage Pageant and Junior Calypso and Party Monarch competitions, are consolidated on the weekend of July 18 and 19. A move, the minister said, underscores the commission’s commitment to youth development and family participation.

The Queen of Carnival pageant is set for July 21, with Carnival City opening July 25. The celebrations will culminate with the Parade of Bands and Last Lap on August 4.

Deputy Chair of the Festivals Commission, Senator Michael Freeland, presented the full schedule at the launch, noting that the 2026 programme features expanded offerings and earlier activations than in previous years.

The launch was not without frank exchanges. When questioned about outstanding payments to vendors, including steel bands, Minister Matthew acknowledged the commission’s financial challenges and called for a structural rethink of how Carnival is financed.

“The day has come where we need to restructure how Carnival gets financed, who pays for it, how it is paid for, so that we can meet our commitment to our stakeholders,” he said, adding that the commission spends approximately five to six million dollars annually on marketing and production while receiving no direct share of the economic revenue generated by increased visitor arrivals.

Matthew also took the opportunity to call out the hotel sector specifically, arguing that hotels, as primary beneficiaries of government concessions and increased tourist traffic during Carnival, have a responsibility to contribute more meaningfully to the festival’s financing.

Regarding cultural preservation, the minister and Festivals Commission Chair Ambassador Elizabeth Makhoul both acknowledged the declining presence of traditional masqueraders on the road, attributing this to rising costume production costs and shifting market demand.

Matthew noted that past attempts to incentivize cultural participation, including a weighted judging system that gave Carnival Monday greater significance in the Band of the Year competition, had not gained sufficient traction. He encouraged mas’ bands to consider reviving traditional elements, particularly on Carnival Monday.

Ambassador Makhoul added that the commission fully subsidizes participation in traditional costumes for both public and private schools as part of its ongoing commitment to keeping cultural mas’ alive among younger generations.

Addressing affordability concerns raised by members of the public, Matthew maintained that the commission’s events remain among the most accessible in the region, with junior events offered free of charge and flagship shows priced well below what private promoters would charge for comparable productions.

The public can follow updates on all Carnival 2026 activities via the Festivals Commission on Instagram and Facebook at Antigua Festivals Official and Antigua Carnival, or reach the commission directly on WhatsApp at 268-727-9201.
