Antigua to Add Two Million More Gallons of Water Daily

Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced that an additional two million gallons of water per day will be added to the national supply by the end of next month, bringing Antigua and Barbuda closer to resolving the long-standing issue of water shortages that has affected residents for generations.

In his Independence Day address marking the nation’s 44th anniversary, Browne said the new production capacity represents one of the most significant steps toward reliable access to clean, potable water across the country.

“We are determined to ensure that every household and every business enjoys reliable, clean, potable water,” Browne said, calling the development a symbol of “independence in motion.”

The Prime Minister also outlined a series of major infrastructure projects that reflect the country’s rapid modernization. These include the ongoing $150 million upgrade of VC Bird International Airport and the planned expansion of Barbuda’s airport, which is expected to begin next year.

Meanwhile, the government’s road-rebuilding programme continues across the island, with major routes restored and dozens of community roads resurfaced in areas including Potters, Parham, Bolans, and Bethesda. Reconstruction of the All Saints Road is set to begin once the Antigua Public Utilities Authority completes re-piping in the area.

Browne said these projects demonstrate the government’s commitment to building a resilient, connected, and forward-looking nation.

“Every road we pave, every pipe we lay, every watt of electricity we deliver strengthens the modern nation we are building,” he said. “This is what independence looks like in motion — progress that reaches every home, every parish, every life.”
