Browne Announces New Housing, Climate-Resilient Investments for Barbuda in 2026 Budget

Prime Minister Gaston Browne used Thursday’s budget presentation to outline several major developments for Barbuda in the year ahead, including new housing, climate-resilient construction, and continued support for vulnerable families.

Browne announced that 50 condominium homes will be built in Barbuda as part of a wider housing initiative funded entirely by the People’s Republic of China.

He said an additional 50 units will be constructed in Bolans under the same arrangement, describing the projects as “gifts” that require no repayment.

He said the assistance formed part of his administration’s ongoing push to improve living standards for low-income families, noting that the government will also expand the Home Advancement for the Poor and Indigent (HAPPI) programme on the sister island.

Browne said Barbuda would continue to benefit from the wider national housing strategy, which includes distributing building materials to vulnerable households and scaling up climate-resilient home construction with support from international climate funds.

“These initiatives are about improving the quality of life for our most vulnerable,” he said, adding that better housing is essential to community dignity and long-term resilience.

The Prime Minister also cited the progress of private-sector tourism investment on the island, referencing PLH’s developments as part of the expanding high-end accommodation market.

Barbuda, he said, will remain a focal point of both social and climate-resilience programmes as the government seeks to strengthen national development in 2026.
