Cabinet Approves Allocation Funds

The Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has officially approved the allocation of financing for a semi-automation system intended to modernize the national water distribution network.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant stated that Cabinet received a “comprehensive briefing” from APUA General Manager John Bradshaw and Acting Water Manager Jason Peters, which focussed on the urgent need for technological intervention to stabilize the network and move toward a central management model.

Merchant highlighted the move toward a semi-automated system as a bridge to future full automation. He stated:

“The Acting Water Manager, Mr. Jason Peters, highlighted the importance of semi-automation and the eventual full automation of key components of the water distribution system.”

According to the Merchant, the technical team advised Cabinet that this transition is necessary to prevent physical damage to the utility’s assets and improve efficiency through real-time data.

“Cabinet was told that automation would significantly reduce service disruptions, minimize pipe ruptures caused by excessive pressure, and allow for real-time monitoring and control of water flow across the island,” Merchant added.

The system is expected to alleviate pressure on field technicians who currently manage flow manually. The Communications official noted that the central, eastern, and south-eastern corridors have been prioritized due to existing elevation and pressure constraints. This automation coincides with a broader US $60 million national re-piping initiative aimed at reducing water loss.

Merchant concluded by stating that the government has directed APUA to close existing gaps in the system by the end of March 2026.
